4.5 out of 5

Amar is all about surfing and the relaxed lifestyle by the ocean. It’s a home for surfers and travellers alike to enjoy the chilled surf atmosphere. We are perfectly located in the center of the charming fishing village, Ericeira, and in the middle of a 6km stretch of world to class surf breaks. You will find the closest beaches and breaks only a short walk away.

You will live in our fully renovated traditional Portuguese surf villa from 1933 with a design concept combining modern simplicity with the fresh ocean breeze.

We do everything to make you feel at home here at Amar. We love to see our guests wandering around barefoot, sharing meals and stories in the garden, chilling on the sun deck or enjoying a drink at the lounge bar while watching the sunset. Step outside to find restaurants, lively bars, shopping and beaches just around the corner.

WE LOVE SURFING at Amar and want you to experience and share our passion for the waves. Our Surf Academy has a structured teaching method that combines theory with lots of hands to on coaching in the waves, video analysis and continuous feedback throughout the course. We aim to give you the best conditions to improve your surfing skills while feeling as at home and comfortable in our surfers paradise as we do. This is why we have created the most complete surf packages and coaching programs.

Location

The villa is perfectly located in Ericeira town center, with the closest beaches and all the town can offer on our doorstep. Walk outside to find restaurants, lively bars and shopping just around the corner.

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation was excellent. It is in a nice hostel, well-located near the center of the pretty town of Ericeira. I had a multi-bed room to myself. The included breakfast was great and the facilities for cooking were good too. There is some nice indoor seating and even a fusball table. There is also a nice, open patio/deck overlooking the town from which the ocean is visible. There was a nice volunteer staff and she organized a really fun midsummer celebration for all the guests. Generally, some of the guests were interested in mingling, although it wasn't the most social atmosphere either. It is a little far from the surf spots, but as an accommodation in itself it is very nice.

How were the surf lessons?

Surf experience was a little disappointing to me - I was looking to progress to green waves after already become comfortable with the basics on surfing whitewater previously. Partly, when I went in June, there was a strong unfavourable onshore winds (unlike later in Augst and after) - this made paddling to the lineup at the beach break we went to (Sao Juliao) even more challenging. Swells also got too big for less experienced surfers which meant surfing generally whitewater rather than greenwaves. Instructor was a nice guy, but ratio of students to instructor was higher compared to places in say Central America (2:1). I would also say instructor was a surfer first and teacher second. Photos/video were taken one day, during the week, but in my case, at least one or two were lost.

In summary, Ericeira is probably best appreciated by solid intermediates+, comfortable with beach breaks, and that surf in the fall or later. Beginners can try whitewater surfing, but progressing to green waves isn't that easy without a very accessible lineup.

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation at Amar surf camp is very nice and the location is great, in the centre of town with shops, restaurants and bars very close. The kitchen is clean and the breakfast is quite amazing.

The hostel is not very organized and first put us in the wrong room, did not tell us that our surf lesson on day 1 was cancelled and they nearly forgot to tell us that they had changed the times of our lesson on day 5.

Amar surf camp is a very calm hostel, perfect if your looking for a relaxing few days. However, there are not many events/evenings organized, so if you're looking to meet new people I wouldn't recommend this hostel.

How were the surf lessons?

I unfortunatly wouldn't recommend surfing with amar surf camp for a few reasons
- first you should note that video analysis and photo sessions are put forward on the site, but they only tell you when you turn up that these are only included in particular packages (that you probably havent signed up for)
- second, you only really surf for under 1 hour and a half (as transport/changing etc take a bit of time)
- the surf instructor is very friendly but the lessons lacked a bit of theory / tips on how to improve

How did you like the accommodation?

The hostel is very cosy and clean, with nice garden and kitchen. Nice place to meet travellers from everywhere.
The town is small but plenty of bars and restaurants with even a nightclub.
Not far from Lisbon, Sintra and Cascais if you want to visit around, bus stop and coach station very close to the hostel.

How were the surf lessons?

Lessons were very good, the instructor was well prepared and kept it safe at all the time, giving advice and correcting mistakes when needed.
Beaches were nice especially S. Julião, as I prefer sandy beaches to rocky ones, not very crowded with other schools so was a nice spot to train.

The Accommodation at Amar Hostel was really nice. We had the possibility of open breakfast or to do it on our own in the big kitchen area. The bathrooms and dorms were clean and there was always someone who we could ask if needed. Ericeira is a nice place with a lot of restaurants, bars,.. everything is extremely close and everyone friendly!

How did you like the accommodation?

The accommodation at the Amar surf academy was very good indeed. It's clean and tidy with a relaxed feel. We had a good sized quadruple room with private bath, and the room was spacious and airy. There's a private garden, a decking area with sofas for sitting out and reading in the glorious sunshine, and a bar that's open in the evening. Breakfast at 6 euros per person was good value.

Ericeira is a perfect town for a stay of a few days to a week. Plenty of bars, restaurants etc, and being an old fishing town it has plenty of character. There are also good beaches nearby to enjoy when not surfing.

How were the surf lessons?

We were very happy with the surf lessons. The two instructors (Nuno and Louis) were excellent. After a brief introduction to the basic moves needed to get up on the board we were straight in the water to practice the basics. The instructors paid attention to each student and gave just about the right amount of specific advice.

The surfing beaches were excellent. Just the right depth of water to allow getting onto the board relatively simple, and on the good days the waves were good for beginners such as ourselves.

How did you like the accommodation?

The hostel was clean and the staff was really nice. You felt direct on holiday when you arrived there. There is a good atmothphere. The rooms were clean and everything was fine (The beds in the 6er dorm were a bit squeaky, but this was fine). I also loved the barbecue site in the kitchen and the places outside, inviting to rest.Ericeira is a really nice city/village and not so crowded (end of June). Because the hostel is not this big we (me and two friends) got directly into contact with the other guests and it was good company.
I really enjoyed holidays there.

How were the surf lessons?

The surf lessons were good aswell. We started in the shallow water and at a site where we could stay on feet all the time. It was the first time I did surfclasses and I liked it. I progressed over the days and got at least also some good photos (organized by the hostel). The instructors gave good individual feedback and it made really fun :)

Very Clean rooms an beautiful house. The location is perfect: 2 minutes walk to the beach, busstation just in front of the house, one minute walk to the supermarket and the city center.
Very friendly and helpfull stuff and cool atmosphere because of the cool volunteers working there.

How were the surf lessons?

Very very good surflessons. They split the grozps into levels. I never was in a group of more than 6people. I even had two private lessons because nobody else took the intermediate class. I learned a lot from Vito, a very calm and patient surf instructor. We went to Ribeira d'Ilhas everyday and could even join them in the van when not participating just to go to the beach. Very precious experience!

How did you like the accommodation?

In a nutshell: We loved it! The relaxing atmosphere, the friendly staff, the spacious garden, the food (especially in cucina 37 and the nearby bakeries). Hope to be back soon - if so, I would definitely love to stay at Amar again.

How were the surf lessons?

Our instructor Vito was more than great, very friendly, patient, relaxed and professional. After every new try he gave as a feedback and tips. The lessons were fun and challenging at the same time. We went surfing at Ribeira d'Ilhas, a picturesque beach about 10 min away from the hostel. It was very interesting to experience different kinds of weather conditions and waves

How did you like the accommodation?

Amar Surf House was excellent. Spotlessly clean, great facilities and friendly staff.
My room was spacious and clean, with a large bathroom for a hot shower after a surf. The surf house is right in the middle of the town within walking distance to the markets, beach, bars, and restaurants. The lodge garden was incredibly picturesque and had plenty of spaces to chill, along with facilities to wash and store wetsuits.

I fell in love with Ericeira with its little cobbled streets, narrow lanes, whitewashed houses.

How were the surf lessons?

Although I had surfed before, it had been awhile so I chose to start fresh and have beginner lessons. Luis was an excellent surf teacher. It had all come back to me by the first day and I was able to stand up and ride a small wave.

The beaches were excellent, just busy at times with other surf schools present

Season

Best time to go depends on your level above. July, August & September are the peak tourist months.

This is where you surf Europe's best coast line and let the fun begin. There are over 12 surf breaks along the Ericeira coast, with different options for all standards. With so much choice you'll feel like a kid in a sweet shop! The area was introduced in the Stormriders Surf Guide to Europe with the heading "Enter the Heartland".

World Surf Reserve
In 2011 it was awarded the title of 'World Surf Reserve', there are only 2 other places in the world that share the title: Santa Cruz, US and Manly, Australia.

If it is your first surfing holiday to Ericeira then head straight to Foz do Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches south of town, they are perfect beginner and intermediate surf spots. Closer to town is Praia do Sul. Another great beginner beach breaks. All best at mid tide but surfable at high and low tide also.

For Intermediates you have the reliable and safe reef break Ribeira d'Ilhas, which host the WSL World qualifying series surf championships every year. And for the more adventurous you have the world class Coxos. That's just naming a few, there are too many surf breaks to mention here!

Don't forget to explore further up the coast - 25 minutes away is Santa Cruz and an hour away is Peniche, home to the World renowned Supertubos and host of the Rip Curl Pro since 2009. 30 minutes south of Lisbon is the Cascais coast with the famous Praia do Guincho surf beach. And when north winds are blowing you can venture further south towards Carcevelos beach and the other surf spots along the Lisbon coast.
