Miramar SurfCamp
Reviews (3)
5 out of 5

Miramar Surfcamp consists of two large complexes. The camp has 13 rooms located right in front of the Punta Miramar with spectacular views of the ocean from most parts of the camp.

There is a large open communal area with great viewing of the surf, amazing sunsets and a place to hang out with fellow guests. An open and breezy hammock lounge area to quietly relax and feed the soul is located on top of a training area used for surf training, yoga, meditating and Jiu to Jitsu or any other kind of personal training you wish you practise.

Rooms are clean with modern furnishings and all kind of services for a comfortable holiday.

4 reasons to choose Miramar Surf Camp:

to Off shore winds, point and beach breaks for all levels of surfers, all year round.
to Uncrowded and easily accessible waves by foot or boat.
to A variety of rooms for all types of holiday makers, from beach front to non ocean view .
to Optional activities include volcano boarding , horse ride , kayaking, fishing ,motorbiking, paddle boarding, or tours to the city of Leon.

Location

Located in the North, in a sleepy fishing village, this surf hot spot offers more than just the average wave. It is graced with opportunity for plenty of recreational activities and a calming, peaceful atmosphere. Blessed with offshore winds all day, rich with points and beach breaks, it provides sets for all levels of surfers, all year round.

During the high surf season, peaking swells allow for experienced surfers to shred the perfect barrel, easily accessed on foot or by boat. It is also an ideal place for those wishing to learn with the peak of a gentle wave at your door step. This majestic paradise, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is home to all different kinds of adventures.

The beauty of Miramar Surf Camp is that it accommodates all levels of surfers, introducing beginners to the stoke of the sport and challenging even the most experienced of surfers with some swell. Throughout the year, at this rare uncrowded haven, the waves usually range between 3 to 8ft. There is no need for a wet suit as the water is warm, perfect if you just want to catch those last quick waves at sunset. During the surf season, waves peak at 12ft off the point directly out in front of the camp, home of a perfect left barrel.

Additionally, there are always an array of waves for beginners at the neighbouring beach breaks. Less than five minute by boat is Puerto Sandino, where experienced surfers can carve 15ft+, 100 meter long waves: a Pacific utopian dream.

How did you like the accommodation?

I absolutely LOVED my stay at Miramar. If I could live here, I would. The staff were all fantastic and made me feel like I was so welcome. The food was excellent (I genuinely don't think I've consistently eaten that well for .... well, forever) and there was an endless supply of coffee, flavoured water and service with a smile for anything else you want (the jugo de sandia was my personal fave). The rooms are by no means high end, but you don't really care too much about that - the beds are comfy, the cabañas are clean and the grounds are very well maintained. Plus, when you can hear the ocean from your bed at night, any 5* luxuries seem unnecessary.

How were the surf lessons?

I was there when there was a cross-over in instructors, so was lucky to get not 1, but 2 eyes on me, helping me on the surf. Both instructors were super safety aware and keen to get us up on the boards. I'm a beginner-beginner, so my skills were by no means great, but they were very patient with me and - I think, importantly - good natured, which made me feel very at ease (when I was quite nervous at some points too).

One thing i would say is that I think there are more beaches/ options for surfing for the intermediate/ advanced surfers here. There were really only 2 places we could go for beginner surf/ beach breaks. The guys going out on the boat ever day to the bigger waves at Puerto Sandino seemed to have a blast! (they all came back looking like they'd had the best day ever). We were lucky in that the beginner beach was only a short walk away - so you can go practice in your own time - but would have loved to have a few more options for places to visit.

How did you like the accommodation?

The room was clean and had a good shower and a nice bed. The accommodation looked over the beach where you could see other people surfing, really a fantastic view.
One of my favorite part was the skatepark, I brought my own skates, but there a boards and protection available for free. Surfing in the morning and skating in the afternoon, wish I could go back to that immediately!
The staff was very friendly and always happy to help you, a bunch of really nice enthusiastic people.
I booked a transfer with the accommodation from the airport (MGA), the driver was there when I landed and it was a comfortable ride, although I didn't know any Spanish and the driver no English :)
The food was nice, they accommodated to my vegetarian needs, but the meat options looked great too.
And the hammocks were perfect for an afternoon snooze.

How were the surf lessons?

The lessons where great, I ended up getting private lessons because I was the only one at this beginner level. The instructions where clear and I improved a whole lot.
The waves were perfect pretty much all the time, very consistent. Either I went to the beach right next to the accommodation or the one with a 5 minute walk.
I would totally go there again.

Punta Miramar

Punta Miramar

Level: Advanced

Ideally situated right in front of Miramar SurfCamp, the wave is a left to hand point break reef Rocky one of the most consistent in Nicaragua that breaks from 2 to 15ft. An easy paddle out through the keyhole in the reef. It works on an incoming tide. This wave wrap around the inside reef, carrying for about 150m with good walls and barrel sections, some waves will offer an inside section wich walls up and can be ridden all the way to the beach.

Outer Reef Punta Miramar

Outer Reef Punta Miramar

Level: Advanced

The outer reef can be mellow and fun with mid to south swells. The wave is rippable and trow to friendly barrels sections, but when the swell range anything over 6ft, the outer reef really starts to work and will not close out and it will only increase in size throwing big double section barrels, for sure when it is ON is one of the best waves of Nicaragua.

Puerto Sandino

Puerto Sandino

Level: Advanced

The most famous wave in the region is Puerto Sandino. This world to class wave is a monster. Right on a river mouth, it can be surfed for more than a minute, that’s why is the most popular spot in the area. If you are a beginner surfer don’t go there. Sandino demands respect, and you need to be a strong swimmer to surf here. We go easily by boat from the hotel. With an offshore break, an amazing left to hander over a sand bar awaits. Breaks at dead low tide and surfs the incoming tide. There’s more, Sandino can break for over two football fields. The break is a left, not a right. If you go right, you’ll not be seen for 45 minutes.
You can’t duck dive this wall of water you’ll have to get back out. Sandino is a long wave it has many sections; it can also provide a long barrel section down the line. If this wave is working and connects you’ll see why it could be known as the best wave in Central America.
As I already mentioned, go with a guide your first time here, and always take a boat.

Salinas Grandes

Salinas Grandes

Level: All Levels

Salinas is a magical place and will be always empty with many peaks going off along the 3 miles of beach.
This spot has a few beach breaks and a river mouth.
This is always a good option when the swell is smaller or for short periods. Good at any picking up swell direction, but usually like some crossed up swell coming from west direction to be at best conditions.
This wave is super hollow and will provide some amazing barrels. It’s about 15 mins away from the hotel by boat.

The Pipes or The Jetty

The Pipes or The Jetty

Level: Advanced

Just north around, a one to minute walk from the hotel, it is a fast long right, usually barrels, on the big swells it can be super scary with the wave crashing towards the jetty. It works on mid to tide and big days not as good cause of the strong currents. It is a really fun wave, and you can get some super nice rides there. The rocks are only a potential problem at low tide. If the swell is in the right direction, the wave can be very hollow and offer a good barrel section. The wave side is 4 to 8 feet.

Shacks

Shacks

Level: Intermediate

Shacks is to the south of the hotel and it’s about 2 minutes walk. It is the easiest wave to get a barrel in Miramar, when you come out of the barrel, you can carve it up or run down the line and boost an air. Shacks only work in the high tide and it's a consistence break really good to snake out from everybody and go surf by yourself.

Shifts

Shifts

Level: All Levels

Located 100 meters from Shacks you are in Shifts, a beach break which can have some rocks. It works when the tide is full. This wave comes a lot of triangles. This is an A frame wave that produces some of the funnest walls and even hollow barrels when you get the Double Up Drainers! This wave is special because there is an outer reef that that breaks up the energy on Large interval swells and creates this super fun playful, rippable lefts and right A to Frames.

El transito

El transito

Level: All Levels

Located just 40 minutes from our hotel, this beach break is a good swell magnet. The sand moves and makes corners and sand bars up and down the beach and works well on small to medium days. We usually descend here when the swell is a little lower. When you get up there, it gets a little closed, so we look for other breaks. It is also a good place to relax, have a drink and a tasty dinner at a beachside restaurant. El transito is one of the most popular beaches in the area and offers natural tidal pools, really worth a visit.

Punta La Flor

Level: Beginner

A super protected bay, which even on the biggest days, has friendly waves for all levels. Very good for beginners.
