Surf Lessons often occur at the areas best and most reliable surf beaches, Praia do Amado and Praia do Amoreira, 20-30 minutes from Lagos. Depending on conditions you may surf at any number of surf beaches nearby such as Maia Praia, Castalejo, Arrifana, Zavial, Cabanas and Porto de Mos. Either way the surf schools will pick you up and take you to the best beaches on the day.
Don't worry if you have no experience whatsoever. The beginner's lessons are taught in waist deep water riding the white water only. You will learn everything from standing techniques to turning and finally paddling outside and learning how to catch ‘green' (unbroken) waves. If you are already experienced the instructors will take you further out and help you develop your technique on bigger waves.
Lagos is a year round surf destination thanks to its position at the corner of the Algarve. It is one of Europe’s best kept secrets and offers waves for beginners, intermediates and expert surfers. It also has the warmest water in Portugal and the winter temperature is warm enough for t-shirts. In the summer the temperature is in the late 20s and stay bright until 10pm.
Within Lagos is the town's long golden sandy beach that seems to go on forever, Meia Praia, a very safe beginners surf beach, but not always reliable.
Further Afield
Head further West and after 20 minutes you arrive at a crossroad, take the turn South West and after a few minutes you reach the laid back surf town of Sagres where you will find breaks such as Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Zavial. Again different standards are catered for in these beaches that wrap around Cape St.Vincent
Alternatively take the right turn and after 10 minutes you will reach a great beginners /intermediate surf beach Praia do Amado. Close by is one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches Praia da Bordeira. Further North is the world class surf break in Arrifana and beginners beach Amoreira. The UK's Independent newspaper sums it up best: "Here is one of Europe's undiscovered treasures - thankfully protected by a 120km-long Parque Natural, which helps ensure that "tourist development" mostly means a café in a shack on a beach. It all seems like a fabulous secret, shared only by the intrepid few who make it this far. Their reward? Having miles and miles of these dramatic beaches (almost) to themselves."

How were the surf lessons?
Filsurf were excellent. We've had four days with Felipe and Mourrinho and cannot recommend them highly enough. They worked really hard to find the best spots for the surf, and then to keep working with us all, keeping an eye on each of us from the beach and from the waves, telling us what we were doing wrong! When the tide was wrong, they took us out the next day (chargeable) but stayed out a long time to make the most of the conditions.
That's the thing to remember with surfing, the tides, wind, waves and temp are out of their control but they did their best, I believe, to work around these.
We were also different levels. My son, 13, is a good surfer, I, 46, have not yet mastered it and struggled occasionally. Mourrinho was right on it, paddling over to me to give me a special push, godblesshim! But they also gave my son the help he needed too, seemingly spinning plates to keep us all looked after.
Their English is pretty good too, certainly good enough and definitely better than my Portuguese!
Finally, there was a great bunch of people on the courses too, who were great fun to learn with. Both made us feel special, like we were the only people that year that mattered. I'm sure we weren't, but they made us feel that way.
If you're looking to learn to surf in Portugal, Lagos is a lovely place to do it - nice town, nice restaurants, and highly recommend Filsurf too.
As first time surfers we found our first surf lesson quite scary but on the second lesson we had a really great instructor called Miguel who was wonderful at helping us to enjoy the surf.
The area is fantastic to surf- would recommend Amado and Borderia. Fil and Ricardo did their best to accommodate us. Fil did give me a great one to one on some larger Green waves. My only suggestions for them would be for them to vary the beaches a little more, make a bigger snack, and bring one of those big tent/sunshades/umbrellas that some of the other surf schools have to provide shade for the hot sun inbetween sessions during midday sun.
The surf lessons were great fun, FilSurf were really good and made the whole experience wonderful. Very family friendly
Surfing was good. The instructors were nice, boys liked Ricardo particularly. We enjoyed it and felt four days was the ideal amount of time. We ended up doing 2 days, a break and then a day, a break (at the instructors request that we were happy to facilitate) and then another day.
Only Theo ended up surfing, Maddie decided the sea was too cold! He really enjoyed it. Â He thought the instructor was great and the beach/waves good for his level of skill.
The surf lesson was fantastic, it was great to get a whole day at it and for us, one day was enough as we were exhausted. The instructors were brilliant and very patient and helpful. The cove they took us to was the perfect area for learning, and it felt safe to leave our belongings on the beach. We have definitely caught the surfing bug and will be doing it again for sure.
The surf instructor was sound and very helpful. My daughter is still a bit young to learn to surf but we really enjoyed the day.
Filsurf were great, Miguel was great, Â fillip stepped up when he realised we were passionate about surfing, we made to good friends I tried to get an other day but they were booked up
Fil was fantastic, and the kids absolutely loved it (So did we!). Fil was a great instructor and gave special attention to the children, I was worried about them being in the sea in a large group but I needn't have worried at all. He has truly inspired my youngest who now wants to be a surf instructor..(!!) I will definitely recommend you guys and would love to do it again.
The beaches were all stunning especially Amoeria where the national reserve made it more lovely, the lagoon and unspoilt beach dunes are stunning. Filip was sweet very good to kids and kindly invited us to use the large tent as ours for the duration, which was great for small boy to take a nap and avoid midday sun. The waves were good for kids to learn, bit messy each afternoon but maybe tiredness set in also, strong current and very bumpy underfoot but filip was very cautious and we had plenty of room shared out between the different surf schools, lunchtime snack was more than enough.
