How were the surf lessons?
Beaches were good. Three different to choose from, Instructions good.
Surf lesson was very nice.. nice and friendly service and since there were only three persons in the lesson, it was great. Biarritz was beautiful coastal town, we will be definitely back!
Surf lessons were great. David & his team were very friendly, got standing on day 1. Had a mixture of conditions and enjoyed them all. Photographer attached to the school got some great shots - excellent quality.
The surf lessons went well, with good tips & tricks and friendly instructors. Surf lessons were held at the best possible 'wave timings' during the day. Maybe 8 people per group is a bit much to be well instructed though. (especially when the instructor needs to give lessons in both French and English)
Surf was small but suited us and we learned lots, beaches were lovely and varied, people were lovely and friendly which was also a bonus:-)
Surf school - David and the team were fantastic, we had an amazing time and have definitely got the surf bug. It’s a great locatoion, aside form the 1,000 steps down. Only on the last day did we discover the path!
The surf lessons were great, Cote des Basque beach is such a beautiful spot. We spent most days here as it was easy to get lunch and the changing rooms were much better than any on any UK beaches i've been to! Its also not as touristy as the main beach. The thousand steps bar is a great recommendation, people were just sitting out all evening watching the waves and the sunset.
The surf school was only amazing, we were both standing by day 1 so we had already exceeded expectation in that regard, and we all felt that after 4 days lessons that we really achieved something with our lessons. The surf coaches were real cool and by end of week were more like mates than teachers, I think everybody on the trip enjoyed their company but also their competence at carrying out a truly professional job.
David at the surf school was both friendly and helpful and made the experience of learning to surf less daunting and very enjoyable.
We found the surf instructors attentive and helpful, and while we went to the same beach, Le Cotes des Basque, every day to surf, we didn't mind as we were just learning and it is such a beautiful beach, nicer than the Grand Plage.
The surf lessons were great - had everyone in the water and up on the boards straight away - hardly any of that messing around on the beach. The other thing we noted (and appreciated) was that the lessons were always at least the full one and a half hours - in the water. The time spent getting kitted out wasn't part of the lesson time and often they all stayed in the water beyond the allotted time just to get that one last wave...and such really positive, friendly staff. Also an amazing photographer who took great pictures! As a neurotic mum, I was also impressed by the safety aspects and the level of supervision everywhere.
Surf school was great and very friendly. I had the impression that the group sizes were a little large though and we could have benefitted from more individual attention. They could perhaps do with another instructor or two. But overall it was all great. I am sure we will return as kids are addicted!
The surf lessons were really good this year. I just booked 3 days first. Then booked some more, which is no problem if you tell David one day before. I met a lot of people - from France, Germany, Holland. I really liked surfing with the same people for several days.
The surfing was good, really liked the instructor and the surf, although frustratingly I had a different board every day so it was difficult to progress much as I was always trying to get used to a new board.
Surf Lessons were well conducted and provided a good introduction to surfing. David was very patient and positive despite the fact that we weren't very good! Overall the experience was very positive, and very well organised.
David at the surf school was really good. I was pretty rubbish, but he was really helpful. He seemed to pick up on everything I did wrong, stuff that other people never noticed. The class was a nice size, very small. Everyone got a bit of individual attention again, and again...There was another surf crowd who had large groups, and kept them very close to the waters edge, they didn't seem to be making much progress. We were brought out much further, where you could actually catch the waves, and build a bit of confidence in the water, and trying to read the waves. The fact that my French isn't the best, was not a problem either. I'd definately recommend the surf school and I'd go back. Also, the changing facilities were really good, they seem very new, and well maintained.
Surf conditions in Biarritz:
Air Temp (°C)
Biarritz lies in the centre of Europe's most epic surf coastline. Running from Seignosse/Hossegor & Capbreton to Hendaye on the French coast and into San Sebastian and Zarautz on the Spanish coast you will get to experience every kind of wave imaginable.
The flow of the Bay of Biscay means the water is warm up until the end of September, so wetsuits are optional!
The city has two main beaches, the Grand Plage and Cote des Basques. The Grand Plage is the town's beautiful chic beach overlooked by the casino and Hotel du Palais. It can produce some excellent hollow waves.
On the south side of town is La Côte des Basques, one of Europe's best beginner beaches and a perfect place to base yourself on a Biarritz surf holiday. The beach is more sheltered than most of the other beaches which means beginners and longboarders can enjoy really nice mellow rides. The beach continues south and has many surfable peaks.
Both beaches host different European and World surf contests, the highlight being the Biarritz Surf Festival in July.
A km north is Anglet's stretch of beaches. You check from the road above which spot is working - some great bodyboard spots also and numerous jetties help shape the banks.
A few kms south is Ilbarritz, great place to find some hidden spots. Keep exploring south and you will come across some great beginner spots like Hendaye, and for the more experienced the pointbreak Lafitenia (beside Quiksilvers European headquarters) and the reef breaks around Guethary such as Avalanche and Les Alcyons.
The famous Belharra big wave lies 2kms off the coast from nearby St.Jean de Luz. It was made famous in 2003 when locals shocked the world by riding its 66ft peak!
