Lanzarote is famous for its uniquely beautiful and rugged landscape. The island plays host to some of the best weather and waves in Europe, so it is little wonder that surfers return there year after year to escape winter and enjoy some great surf.

If you're thinking of booking a winter sun and surf holiday, and want to know more about what the waves are like in Lanzarote have a read of our guide below and get out there:

  • 1- West is Best

Lanzarote is blessed with kilometres of amazing surf breaks around the small island (it's only 60 by 20km), so there will always be surf spots working regardless of swell and wind direction.

However, some of the island's best waves are found along the western coastline.  The infamous Playa de Famara is a perfect beach break for beginner to expert surfers to play in. Its stunning backdrop of the Famara mountain range sets the scene for the 6km stretch of beach and surf.

  • 2- To the East…

Whilst most of the surf attention can be directed to Famara's amazing beach, the east holds court for beginner surfers with the beach break Arrieta.  When conditions are right the beach gives the perfect environment to get out into the easy waves and working on your technique.

For those more advanced or looking to improve, visit Punta Mujeres just north of Arrieta. It's reef rock break will offer more challenges for all surfing abilities.

  • 3- Southern Sun

If you're looking for more progression, then heading slightly south from the western beach of Famara to El Centro in the town of la Santa is for you. El Centro is a surprisingly easy reef break that's perfect at high tide.

However although the majority of the best waves are found around the west and east coasts of Lanzarote, there are some to be found around the south of the island. If you get the change check out El Golfo, Playa de Janubio on the south west shore, and Playa Honda and Matagorda on the south eastern coast.
