There's nothing like escaping with the family for an activity based holiday.  The kids are entertained and have a healthy outlet for all their energy, leaving you free to join in, lie on the beach, or even take some time out to treat yourself.  One of the best activities for all the family is surfing, as you can never be too young or old to start surfing and have a real laugh.  So to help you take the first step in learning to surf, here are a few ideas on where to take the family for an activity surf holiday:

  • 1- Ecolodges, Ericeira

These beautiful lodges in the Portuguese town of Ericeira are perfect for a family with a conscience.  As the name suggests the ecolodges are set up to be as eco-friendly as possible, and even the grounds has an ecological swimming pool.  Ericeira itself is known as a European surfing mecca, with 9 surf beaches within a 4km stretch of the town.  However, when you're not enjoying the waves, make the most of wandering the stunning cobblestone streets, and discovering the delicious regional delicacies in the bars and restaurants.

  • 2- Las Marismas, Fuerteventura

If you're looking for an all year round destination for the family, then Fuerteventura in the Spain Canary Islands is ideal. The island has some of the best weather and waves in Europe, as is particularly popular with surfers during winter as Fuerteventura manages to still stay hot and sunny.  Stay in the northern town of Corralejo at the self catered apartments of Las Marismas.  The location is spot on for walking into the town centre for shopping, dining, and even a cheeky post surf ice-cream.

  • 3-Vila Gale Hotel, Lagos

When the family wants to get away for some fun waves and quiet beaches no matter what time of year, then Lagos in Portugal is a brilliant option.  Tucked into the Western coast of the Algarve, Lagos gets some of the warmest waters and weather in Europe, and even benefits from 8 months a year of 20 plus sunshine.  There are masses of beginner, intermediate, or advanced surf spots to choose from, and the coastline is simply breath-taking.  Stay at the four star Vila Gale Hotel for a real treat, as it's located on Maia Praia beach, and only 15 minutes walk into Lago's enchanting old town.
