Tucked away from the noise of Weligama’s local town and tourist strip, Freedom Surf Villa is the perfect place to unwind after a day of sea, sand and surf.
Our light and airy house has three high quality, luxury bedrooms and a 4 to bed dorm room, all with ensuite bathrooms and their own private outside space, sometimes overlooked by monkeys and a variety of birdlife. Our green garden welcomes you to our peaceful haven. We have a great communal, open plan lounge, kitchen and dining area, where you can socialise in the evenings and share your stories. There is wifi for you to use throughout the villa and a laundry service for your convenience.
We include a great healthy breakfast, sometimes with a Sri Lankan twist, to give you the best start to your day (gluten and dairy free options are available on request).
Whether you are a seasoned surfer, first time learner, a couple or solo traveller exploring, Freedom Surf Villa provides a relaxed, comfortable base you can make your home during your time in Weligama.
Location
Weligama is a lively fishing town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. The name Weligama literally means 'sandy village', which refers to the area's sandy sweep bay which is perfect for beginner surfers.
Freedom Surf Villa is a 10 minute walk from the surf beach and a 15 minute walk to the centre of town. Surf spots in Mirissa and Midigama are also only a 10 minute tuktuk ride away.

Surf Lessons we offer:
Kids Surf Lessons
We offer one on one lessons for kids from ... years up. We do ask that parents stay at the surf school on the beach during the lesson.
Our surf lessons are 1.5 hours and the price of the board and rashvest is included in the lesson price
Beginner Surf Lessons
We offer packages with either 1 or 2 beginner surf lessons a day. Surf lessons are one on one and last 90 minutes. Lessons start from Freedom Surf School on the beach in Weligama Bay. Our surf instructors explain every step of learning to surf clearly, teaching you the correct techniques and correcting you where necessary, guiding you to improve and advance to green water waves.
Intermediate Surf Lessons
Lessons are 90 minutes and offer step by step guidance on riding green water waves to give you the confidence to go out alone. Rash vest and board rental are included in the price. Lessons start from Freedom Surf School in Weligama Bay and offer a 1:1 Student/Teacher ratio.
Surf Guide
We offer half day or full day surf guiding packages with transport / surf guide and surfboard hire included. We can visit alternative point / reef breaks in the area. We only offer this surf guiding for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Weligama Beach Break
Level: Beginner
Weligama is a great place to learn to surf with a long stretch of shallow sandy beach. The bay is protected somewhat from the wind, if the rest of the coast is blown it can be better here.
Weligama Fisherman's Point
Level: Intermediate
Long paddle out (approx 800m) from a beach entry point, near Weligama harbor across very shallow reef. Peeling 300m right break that holds between 3 and 5ft, works well in a big swell.
Mirissa
Level: Intermediate
In Mirissa you can surf a low power right to hander over reef break near the rocks and a left to hander near the harbor. Works really well with a good swell up to 6ft, however check the local tides as the reef can become shallow when the tide is out.
Ram's Right, Midigama
Level: Advanced
Short, fast and hollow right reef break. Fast left and right sections over a shallow reef. Clean barrels holding up to 5 to 6ft and a 400m ride.
Plantations, Midigama
Level: Intermediate
A reef break with a sand entry. Plantations is favored by beginners moving to intermediate. Good first reef break. Left and rights, holds up to 4ft with 300m rides.

Season
November - March is the dry season and has the most consistent surf.
Weligama is a perfect beginner and intermediate surf break. It is arguable the most consistent beach break on the South Coast.
Only a quick 4KM and ten minutes by tuk-tuk from Weligama is the idyllic Mirissa. A quiet stretch of beach that has turquoise and crystal clear waters on beaches fringed by palms.
Mirissa is an established stop-off for surfers, with two breaks at either end of the beach. There is a right-hander reef break near the rocks that doesn’t generate much power, that is great for those who are progressing on to reef. And an equally good left-hander close to the harbour.
